Museum of Us

About this project

This TV production company needed a website to play a supporting role to the Channel 4 television series Tony Robinson’s Museum of Us, a programme that centred on the personal and local histories of residents of various streets around the UK. Each week, host Tony Robinson and team interviewed local residents and invited them to collaborate on a pop-up museum with displays of artefacts and stories from the street.

As the TV programme could only scratch the surface of presenting the objects and stories from the exhibitions, the channel and production teams decided that a website would be the ideal way to showcase elements of the exhibitions that would only be seen in a fleeting few moments on screen, to allow viewers to spend more time exploring.

The website needed to be created at the same time as the final editing of the TV shows, creating its own challenges because nothing was signed off in terms of branding yet. I created simple branding based on one of the popup gallery signs, keeping the community and handmade feeling. I created pages for each of the locations, blending anecdotes with behind the scenes photos to create a narrative.

The website launch needed to tie in exactly with the launch of the TV series, so I coordinated all of the technical and timing aspects to ensure we went live at the right time.

NOTE: The series was not picked up for a second season, so the website has been taken down by the producers.
